As the premier forum for international economic cooperation, the G20 is uniquely positioned to discuss the various  global trade and investment policy issues.

In its document of announcing the key agenda items of the G20 Summit in 2016, China highlights “robust international trade and investment” as one of four key themes of this year’s G20 agenda, together and interlinked with other three themes on finding a new path for growth, more effective and efficient global economic and financial governance, and inclusive and interconnected development.

ICTSD has been leading various projects with the objective of advancing sustainable development through trade-related policy-making for two decades. Since 2012, the Centre has convened a flagship E15 Initiative, co-implemented with World Economic Forum, assembling over 370 international experts to collectively deliberate and produce policy options for improved governance of the global trade and investment system in the 21st century. The E15 Report was launched by ICTSD and the WEF at the 2016  Annual Meeting at Davos. The report has been welcomed by several trade ministers and senior officials.

Since 2011, ICTSD China has been convening Chinese policy-makers, experts, business and opinion leaders around the globe to leverage China’s constructive and strategic role in advancing the global public interest of international economic governance at the WTO, the G20 and beyond.  Some key recommendations emerging from ICTSD dialogues in Geneva, March 2015 and in Beijing, May 2015, have been well reflected in the G20 TIWG discussions.

This Nanjing workshop takes a step further in providing a platform to discuss some of the policy issues with key stakeholders, including senior trade and investment officials from the G20 members and their guest countries.. We have invited leading thinkers to present the latest analysis, facilitate discussions among all participants, and generate forward-looking and practical ideas for the G20 Shanghai TMM and Hangzhou Summit in 2016 and beyond. The workshop will cover the following areas: facilitating investment cooperation, supporting multilateral trade system, boosting trade growth and enhancing the inclusiveness of Global Value Chains.

This event is organised by ICTSD, in partnership with Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. The organisers would like to acknowledge the ICTSD core donors and British Embassy China Prosperity Fund for making this event possible.
